Thoughts on Another

After Noah turned one, I started getting the question a lot. Those of you who have celebrated baby's first birthday know the question. "Are you ready for another one?" At the time, I wasn't. I kind of wondered if I was ever going to get there. I even talked about it here. Well ladies, I am finally there. I'm over the "but Noah is my baby" feeling. He's becoming more and more of a little boy each day, and while I long for the baby Noah days sometimes, I also feel excited about the idea of making a whole new little person to marvel at.

This is not something that we will be doing in the very near future. I find raising a toddler to be a bit exhausting and can't even imagine having an itty bitty baby to care for on top of everything else. I would like Noah to be on his way to being potty trained, able to be reasoned with around behavior, and more independent with play, dressing, and feeding before I take on another dependent, demanding little monster. I also want to try to time things to maximize maternity leave again. But I don't want to wait so long that the age gap is much more than 3 years. So that puts us in the ballpark of May or June, ideally. (Ideal to me anyways.)

Brian is not with me on this, at least not 100%. He worries about the financial aspects of having a second baby, and I think he also wonders when he can get back to his old hobbies like golf, poker, and snowboarding. It's true, things aren't nearly as carefree or spontaneous as they used to be, and money is tight. But somehow people do it all the time. People with even less money and more debt than us. So we'll find a way. I know we will.

And how can we not? Look at these amazing little hopefuls! If they turn out even half as perfect as Noah, it will all be worth it!

(Noah is the one furthest to the left.)

  1. I know exactly how this feels....I am in the same place. I still have freakouts from time to time that I won't be capable of handling a toddler and a newborn, but I try to remember that we learned a lot from caring for Jackson as a newborn and infant, and that any future kid will benefit from that, as will we. My biggest hesitation is that we have nothing on ice and have to start from scratch with IVF. Blech. I am a certified veteran, but that doesn't make me any more excited to jump back in. I keep coming back to the same thought, that before we knew we needed IVF we wanted 2 kids. So, there's no legit reason we shouldn't try for 2. The rest is details. :)

  2. Brian isn't going to get back to his old hobbies for a long time, regardless. But I know it seems like forever now, believe me, the years fly by in a flash. I have all the time in the world now to golf, and I miss my boys. Who knew.

  3. My goodness, I go so back and forth on this. Sometimes I have such bad baby fever that I am almost crying, and other times I'm like "Oh my gosh I am so glad I don't have two babies right now, and that I'm not facing having another baby within the next 9 months!"

It's weird. I am so with you on wanting my Noah to be more independent in everyday life and activities. And my Noah is extremely attached to ME. Daddy is muck compared to Mommy. And babysitters are unheard of in our lives. Noah seems to need me even more than he did when he was a newborn. So that makes the decision even harder, because unless something drastic happens, I will be being pulled in two different directions.

Sigh. I think it would all be so much easier if we could just get knocked up like normal people. We probably wouldn't be overanalyzing everything. It would just happen and we would just make it work. It's just so much bigger of a deal to go do treatments.
